The aim of the authors is to restore the use of traditional wild plants that represent both a great food source and a cultural resource and play a key role in health protection.
This handbook contains a lot of evocative colour pictures and is divided in two parts: the first one is a general introduction and the second one shows the data sheets of about 80 wild plants. Beside the botanical and technical descriptions, the authors provide the “history, myths, legends and special uses” of each plant, as well as the various methods of collecting them and their uses as food and health remedies.
The traditional herb uses that you may learn by reading this book are many: did you know that in 1630, during the time of the plague of Toulouse, four thieves were able to steal properties without being infected thanks to a protective mixture made of Angelica, Ginger and Garlic? Or that the queen of Hungary in the 16th century recovered thanks to a macerate of Lavender, Rosemary and Mint?
In addition to these anecdotes, the book also provides plenty of hints on the culinary uses of the roots of Common sow-thistle, of the most tender trunks of Common golden thistle, and of the small leaves of Common Purslane.
- Sandro Di Massimo, biologist, ethnobotanist, scholar of food, medicinal and poisonous plants. He published articles on systematic botany in some specialized magazines. He is the author and co-author of the following books: Piante e veleni. Le principali piante tossiche in natura e in giardino (2002), Herbarium. Conservare piante e fiori (2003), Planta Medica. Le erbe officinali tra scienza e tradizione (2005). As a parallel activity, he has practiced and studied Yoga for over twenty years in the light of the latest scientific findings. He currently works at the Centre for Floristic Research of the region Marche
- Maurizio Di Massimo, herbalist specializing in spagyric and ayurvedic medicine. He is co-author of the text Planta Medica: Le erbe officinali tra scienza e tradizione (2005). He is entered on the professional register of the Italian Yoga Federation and of the Union Européenne de Yoga. He got the diploma of the International Yoga Fellowship Movement at the Bihar School of Yoga (Munger, India). He is a Yoga and Ayurveda instructor. He got a diploma in Ayurveda at the Himalayan Research Institute.
